At William Penn School, it is our intent that personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of a modern and diverse society. Our goal is to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially.
We encourage our children to develop their sense of self-worth and feeling of belonging by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community.
Our progressive curriculum helps the children build a positive self-image in order to develop healthy relationships with others. We have a caring ethos which is built around our Quaker values of integrity, reflection, equality, peace, friendship and simplicity.
We also ensure we have a clear and structured SRE syllabus which is delivered throughout the school in the summer term. Lessons are given on sex and relationship education in Year 5/6. The context of these lessons stresses the importance of the family and stable, loving relationships. The lessons are led by the class teacher alongside the SENCo. Lessons are supported by age-appropriate learning materials. Parents have the opportunity to view these materials before they are used and have the right to withdraw their children from the sex education lessons provided in Y5/6.
The school has a number of PSHE focused workshops and visits to cater for the needs of our school community. These include, anti-bullying and NSPCC workshops, Loan a Lamb week, Rail safety workshops and visits from fire safety officers and our local community police officer. We also have regular workshops led by parents who share information about their careers with the children.
