Curriculum Statement

Curriculum Statement – Intent, Implementation, Impact

Intent

At William Penn we are dedicated to giving our children the best possible start in life. Our aim is for them to develop as happy, confident, successful learners. Our children will be encouraged to work both independently and collaboratively with others. They will have high aspirations, making positive contributions to the school community and beyond.

We offer a vibrant curriculum that builds sequentially upon prior learning and is ambitious for all. Children will develop the essential knowledge, skills and understanding which are the building blocks for later life. We plan carefully so that our children remember what they have learnt.Our curriculum provides pupils with memorable experiences, often linked to our local area and context. We create diverse and rich opportunities from which children can learn and develop a range of subject specific transferable skills and knowledge. We aim to raise aspirations, develop a sense of personal pride in achievement and provide a purpose and relevance to learning.

The school is committed to inclusion and provides a stimulating environment that meets the needs and interests of all learners. Every single child is supported to enable them to reach their true potential.

Implementation

Our curriculum is delivered through a knowledge-engaged approach where knowledge and skills are intertwined. All of our classes have a carefully chosen main topic for each term. We seek to make our curriculum interconnected and will look to make purposeful connections across subjects wherever appropriate. We also guide them to make connections with prior learning and to use and grow their “sticky knowledge” across a subject.

Subject leaders play an important part in the success of the curriculum through a regular programme of monitoring, evaluation and review. This ensures that curriculum developments are incorporated into whole school practice. Our curriculum ensures that the needs of our children can be met within high quality first teaching, supported by targeted interventions for both individuals and groups.

The curriculum is enriched by high quality visits from experts. This could be a musical workshop, a visit from an author or a local conservation expert. We invite parents and other stakeholders into the school to share their knowledge and career journeys which inspires our children. Our extra-curricular after school and lunch time clubs are chosen carefully to enable children to develop additional skills. We always put inclusion at the forefront of our decision making.

Impact

We are proud of the impact of our curriculum and the outcomes are clearly visible across the school:

  • Achievement – good end of Key Stage Outcomes;
  • Attendance – our children want to come to school;
  • Behaviour – children are engaged and ready to learn;
  • Displays - these are designed to both support the pupil’s learning and celebrate their success;
  • Enthusiasm –  strongly evidenced through pupil voice, supportive feedback from parents and a very active PTA;
  • Pride – children’s work is well presented and we create opportunities for them to share it with their peers and families.
